  • Wanderlust Wednesday: Rethinking Spring Break Travel

    November 7, 2018 By Alicia

With the holidays gearing up, it may seem strange to be talking about Spring Break.  But in reality, it will be here in a blink!  Kelly Gruber, owner of Sherry Lane Travel is back today with ways to Rethink Spring Break.

Leave us a comment below if you have any questions!

Rethinking Spring Break – Tips from Kelly Gruber, Sherry Lane Travel

If you’re like most people, spring break means sand, parties and tanning oil.  But, more and more, we are seeing a shift – travelers are trading in a “fly-n-flop” vacation for something that offers a little more substance.  Here are just a few of the trends and fresh ideas that we have seen as we prepare our clients for spring break 2019.  In addition to these, our well is deep, and we are always glad to brainstorm.  The main thing to note is that spring break time is a valuable opportunity, and we find that our clients want to make the very most of it.

    1.  European Vacation

Cities that are mercilessly hot and swarmed with tourists in the summertime, can be comfortably cool and uncrowded in the spring.  Bring your coat, and enjoy a more leisurely, low key pace. I particularly like Spain, Italy and Greece in the spring, since their summertime temperatures can hit the 100s.  (Once I had a client get heat stroke in Venice!)   But, other European spots are fun this time of year as well.  Think about St. Patricks day in Ireland!

    2.  Active Adventures

A number of our clients go straight to skiing out of habit.  But, If you are a black diamond kind of family, there are many other activities and destinations that might float your boat (pun intended).

Why not consider some of these, instead:

    • Scuba diving or surf lessons
    • Waterfall rappelling in Costa Rica
    • Hiking the Waimea Canyon
    • Mountain biking in the Sonoran Desert
    • Kayaking through the everglades
    • Bungee jumping in New Zealand
    • Ice climbing in Iceland

    3. Off the Beaten Track

One of my favorite ways to meet this objective is a yacht trip, which is really the opposite of a traditional big ship cruise in many ways.  For one, the smaller size allows the vessel to visit many uncrowded, out-of-the- way spots that a large ship simply could not visit (think St. Barts, Jost Van Dyke, and Capri).  And, some offer unique experiences, like sleeping under the stars, or jet skiing right off the back of the boat! The Lush List readers get extra special amenities when booking any Seadream yacht voyage (including spring break) with Sherry Lane Travel through May 31 (subject to availability).  More details here.  It’s yachting, not cruising!

    4.  Multigenerational Connecting

I think we can all agree that today’s kids are busier than they have ever been before.  School work is intense, activities are all-encompassing and time available for grandparents keeps shrinking.  A recent study showed that 10% of 2018 spring breakers took along Nana and Pops.  And, my anecdotal experience shows a similar trend.  Increasingly, clients are bringing along grandparents to find opportunities for quality time and bonding that is otherwise so hard to come by.  There are a number of great destinations and activity options that work really well for an extended family of all ages.  And, older family members offer unique perspectives that enrich a family travel experience.

We’d love to help you with your Spring Break Travel this year.  Please contact us at Sherry Lane Travel, 214-692-5685 or kelly@sherrylanetravel.com.
